Win an Automax/Faulhaber Combo or one of 2 Easymax's

Postby TonyB » Tue Sep 21, 2010 8:47 pm

For the next 6 weeks, we will be accepting submissions for an impromptu Model Solar Car Photography Contest. ;)
SF admin will judge the submissions on creativity, and overall picture quality.
Anyone may enter the competition, students, ex-students, teachers etc. Just sign up and post a picture.

The theme of the photography is:

Anything Solar Car related.

Use your imagination.

You may submit as many photos as you like, however, prizes will be limited to one prize per person.

Prizes are:
1st: Faulhaber 2232 Motor + Automax MPPT Combo (The Automax is a Fully Auto Tracking Maximiser)
2nd: Easymax (solar Maximiser)
3rd: Easymax

In the interest of sanity, i am going to cap the size of submissions at 1600 pixels wide. Feel free to use the attachment option, or link to photos hosted elsewhere. Naturally, any photo submitted should be your own original work. Keep it clean.

All submissions must be made within this topic.

EDIT: Ive been asked if images over 1600 pixels wide will be accepted. The answer is NO. To shrink your digital camera photos, you can download and use programs like IrfanView for free.

EDIT2: To help stimulate activity in the community, we have decided to increase the competition run-time from 2 weeks to 6 weeks. I have also decided to include a Faulhaber 2232 Minimotor for first place.

The Official Cut-Off date is:

Monday 8th of November 11:59PM

All entries submitted after the cut-off will not be considered.
The Winners will be announced on Wednesday 10th 8:00PM.

Another pic,

Image
The same picture as before, just a bit more creative. Notice it looks a bit like a comic drawing, partial black and white and it is darker on the edges than it is where we are.

Forgot to mention. It's been a while that we have seen the old W.A. track. Car's that fall from 1meter high usually break. But that little red car, just didnt understand the concept of breaking!

Hi Tony. I was just wondering if the photos will be judged via Solar Freak or will they be downloaded? Hence is the only way to confirm size?

All my photos are 1600pix wide however on solar freak they care compressed down to fit onto the page, hence the image isn't clear. Not saying the quality is any better when downloaded but I believe its more clearer when downloaded. If it is judged via Solar Freak can you let me know to adjust the size. Thanks

I've always questioned the concept of having the WA track 1m off the ground. Makes no sense to me. Students spend all year designing and constructing a car and then if it's any good and hits a bad joint when the sun comes out it's all over for another year.
I hope that the WA committee look at lowering it down to ground level the next time it's used.

Jun, do Girrawheen still have any 2233V4.5 motors in reasonable condition?
Over the last few months I have been gathering experimental no load losses data from various past and present solar challenge motors and only the 2233 still remains. I already have one set of figures but they appear to be a little high and I have some reservations about the state in which the motor was in when tested. Any chance of Girrawheen being able to help out to get a second data set?

Tony, I doubt I'm eligible for a prize in this but I'll see if I can dig up some photos and post them up nonetheless.

When judging the photos, all pictures will be viewed in their native resolution.

Marc, the competition is open to everyone, including teachers, ex-students, committee members even overseas contributors.

The winners will be decided based on feedback from the community, feedback from various committee members (includes you Marc) and other forum members that don't race/never raced solar cars.

Feedback for the photos is welcome, please post in the thread itself.

Great photo's guys. Im going to post some 2009 Sunsprint Finals action!

Image
After race 1, a great win! Thumbs up!

Image
The anxious wait for race 2 to start

Image
The gap between the cars after one lap on race 2

Image
Coming up to 'Sunsprint Bend', so they call it, still race 2. Notice the two different ways of wheel allignment. Stealth's front wheels further apart than the back, KARO III's front wheels much closer in than the back wheels

Image
Race 3, Stealth (firefly) just took a 2 minute break, and here they come! This is where my heart rate went very high

Image
Still race 3, and up we come on a true 'Heartbreak Hill'. Notice the black figure on the track... thats two cars! Now look at the gap! I hereby name this image, THE ROAD AHEAD. A little cliche, but hey, you can clearly see the road ahead!

Image
Don't we all love these moments. Damn you hill! Stealth was just too good up the hill, in all races, and that even showed at the 2009 nationals aswell. Photo has a nice 'zoom in' sort of effect

I probably edit these images, post them in the next couple of days.

Marc, I don't think W.A intends to use that track ever again. That is if we have access to the national track every year. However, I wouldn't mind seeing W.A. produce a new track which is of the same or better quality as the national track at 100m. The reason that we had our track on tables was to allow the public to view the competition better. It also give us an extra 20-30 minutes of direct sunlight shinnying on the track since we have our comp in the city. But there are its down points as you mentioned.

Please define reasonable condition Marc? I currently have the motor, along with the 2224? 6v. I was planning on the using it for my demo car. I believe the 2233 at 4.5volt when correctly geared right can beat most of the cars in the W.A comp. What results are you after? I don't know the history of the motor but I believe it can still win our state event over the 2232 6v, if anyone has the guts to try. Given that thy have a reasonable 2233 motor and car design.

I like the enthusiasm but just remember copyright issues although no-one puts copyright sign at the bottom of the images. I bullied my sister into taking photos for me, but I still asked if I could post them up. Also W.A. has a media press release form that we all must sign before the event. Does any other state act likewise?
