To go above 10Adc

Postby solarflare » Fri Jul 30, 2010 9:05 pm

Hi all

I am getting a 2kw grid feed system fitted, this will have 12 175w panels. This system has a Orion inverter. What is the best configuration for this inverter as I have read that two banks of 6 is not optimal for the Orion, as the Imp will tend to go above 10Adc, especially in summer. The Orion has a hard limit of processing 10Adc, which will means the inverter will not be able to track the MPPT of the panels at times.
Unfortunately re-wiring to be 1 string of 12 will push the voltage up way past the 450Vdc limit (or 500Vdc for the CMS).
Maybe just leave one panel off?
Any ideas? :?

Yea that's the problem with these inverters.

The best configuration, by far, on these is 10-11 190W panels in series. giving you a Vmp of around 350 volts, and Voc is still withing the 500V max.

Other than that, you will need to go 2 x 6, and you might get some tracking issues, hence a little less power in summer as you mentioned.

Word of warning - watch out the installers supply the correct rated DC isolator and use correctly-rated DC cabling. I've seen too many systems where a 500v-rated isolator has been used, and the Voc is over 416v. AS5033 requires the isolator and cable insulation rating to be minimum of 1.2X the Voc. Either installers just don't know the regulations (specific to installing solar panels!) or are trying to cut costs (500v isolator = $30, 800v isolator = $300, and they'll use cheapest-they-can-find Twin TPS instead of using single-core double-insulated (rated at 1000v))...

Thanks for the advice guys, I will check on all the points raised.
Inspector this is a new house we are building the panels go on the roof on Tuesday so will check the isolator and what cabling which is already up in the roof tomorrow looks like speaker wire, and bring up what would be the best configuration but as you said TonyB 2 X 6 looks about it.
