three phase vs single phase

Postby SolarNewbe » Tue May 12, 2009 4:51 pm

Hi all, good to see discussion on solar electricty, this forum is unique.

I'm having a small (<2.5kW) solar power system installed on my house in Perth.
I'd like to know whether to keep my 3 phase connection to the grid, or have it changed to single phase.
The 3 phase was originally installed for a bore which no longer works and won't be replaced.
When the solar system is installed my 1970s meter will need to be upgraded. Either I get a single phase meter (~$250 installed)and request Western Power to change the overhead line to single phase ($300) OR upgrade to a new 3 phase meter (~$660 installed).
Any feedback on which way I should go.

Its entirely up to you.

Personally, i would save the $400 and go with single phase, as your not using three phase. Plus installation would probably cost more.

Thanks Tony,
It makes sense to switch to single phase, I was looking for any reason not to change from 3 phase.
