solar hot water install question

Postby bollo » Mon Oct 11, 2010 12:02 pm

Hi guys i have decided to go with a new solar hot water system as well as solar power & have just had the site inspection done, now i am no fool when it comes to working around subbies & i think that these guys are trying to take me for a ride, the solar hot water system is through Origin Energy who use subbies to install there DUX systems. Ok now can anyone tell me if i need to have an RCD installed at a price of $198 inc GST ? i have spoken to my mate who is a sparky & he told me that he is pretty sure you don't need one on a fix piece of power equipment (ie hot water),
also i was told that as part of the install they allow up to 30 meters of pipe & cable for the install then extra would be at my cost & seeing that the panels would not be more then 6 meters away from the tank then allow a few meters each end i am well under 30 meters & they are trying to charge me another $215.60 for additional lagged flow & return lines
anybody else had these extra charges or think they are being taken for a ride ?

cheers Allan

PS i am on the verge of cancelling the lot

If they are installing electric boosted SHWS from scratch, they will need to add a HW main switch for it in the meter box.

And because they are making changes to the meter box, the will have to add an RCD there if you don't already have one, as this is the current Australian standard.

I cant comment on the extra piping though.

Do you have mains gas?

I have a Dux gas assisted (instantaneous) solar installed.

2 years old and works great, hardly ever need the gas boost.
