Adaption of charge controllers for MPPT?

Postby nwilkins » Wed May 27, 2009 1:32 am

Hi Solar Freaks,

I am working on a rural electrification project in Mongolia. There are several PV systems and hybrid systems (wind and PV) in the countryside (off grid with batteries) without MPPT installed. The PV arrays are 30 kW each, modules around 170 W. Is it possible to adapt an existing charge controller to include this function or must the charge controllers be replaced with new ones? What would be the costs for this for a 30 kW array?

Thanks and best regards,
Nicola Wilkins

Hello Nicola,

The simplest way i see would to be to add a small MPPT controller to each panel. This would be even more efficient as all panels have different characteristics. For a 30KW system your looking at around 175 solar panels at 170 watts. So thats, 175 MPPTs which would cost you around 80 dollars each, so around 14 thousand dollars.

The MPPTs can be connected in conjunction with your existing charge controllers. You just add one to each panel, then connect there outputs in series, or parallel depending on your configuration.

Cheers,
Tony.
